Chikankari embroidery covers this top from shoulder to hem, worked in white thread on a white cotton ground so the pattern registers as texture rather than colour. The cutwork carries on into a scalloped hemline, and that finish is what makes a plain sleeveless top worth keeping for years instead of a season.

Cotton, breathable, cut short enough to sit at the high waist. A collar and a front button placket give it a shirt like structure, while the sleeveless body keeps it wearable through April and May in a city that does not cool down until eight at night. Sizes start at XS and go to 5XL, with 4XL and 5XL there for plus size buyers.

It goes with high waist denim, linen trousers, a long skirt or a plain cotton palazzo. Friday at the office, a summer brunch, a travel day, a relaxed festive morning under a shrug. Oxidised silver against all that white thread is the easiest styling call, though a thin gold chain works if the rest of the outfit is plain. Layer a shrug over it when the office air conditioning wins. Hand wash cold for the first few rounds, dry in shade, and the chikankari will not pull loose at the cutwork edges.
